Venues will open around Christmas time depending on the weather.

Snow and ice festivals have taken place in Harbin for decades, mainly in Zhaolin Park south of the river. In 2000, winter events began on Sun island featuring large buildings and structures which dwarfed previous activities in Zhaolin Park. However the intimacy, ice carving contest and night lighting in Zhaolin Park still make it a must see in addition to the activities on Sun Island. On Sun Island you can visit Ice and Snow World which is especially nice when lit up in the evening. It is a colorful city of ice. Rather than using ice as a building material, you can see structures made of snow at the Snow Sculpture Park on Sun Island. A walk up the Zhongyang Pedestrian Street makes for great people watching, architecture spotting, coffee, snacks, dining, photo opportunities, and of course shopping. A hotel on this street is recommended for convenience.

There is plenty of activity on the ice of the Songhua River, which is where the Zhongyang Pedestrian Street meets the river.

The St. Sofia Church is a classical piece of architecture worth a visit. Inside you may even see a Chinese choir perform. There are also various exhibitions. Inside the church is nice and warm. Next door is an excellent indoor local market for winter clothes and souvenirs.

Another unique activity in Harbin is to visit the Siberian Tiger Park, where you drive around in a bus and the tigers come and look at you. Available for purchase are live chickens, ducks, sheep and cattle which you watch get fed to the 800 pound tigers outside your window while safely in your bus. Sounds inhumane but somehow everyone liked it.

As for shopping, you could conceivably buy all the winter gear you need here. No shortage of hats, scarves and paraphernalia. Also lots of Russian goods for sale due to Harbin's close proximity to the border. Other shopping includes chocolate, souvenirs and endless other things if you browse around.
