Baisha Naxi Embroidery Institute
白沙纳西传统手工刺绣院 In Baisha, traditionally, a girl's ability to run a household is judged by the quality of her embroidery. Naxi society has traditionally been a matrilineal society, which meant that the women inherited property and household rights. The embroidery institute has been around for centuries and was an important part of the Silk Road, but its status has diminished in recent times and its more difficult to recruit young women into the art form in modern times.
At the Baisha Naxi Embroidery Institute you can try your hand at the craft and see how difficult it really is and why it takes so long to complete one work of art. There are also a couple of shops in Baisha selling the art. As with anywhere in China, you need to bargain.
