Tiger Leaping Gorge Travel Guide
虎跳峡Tiger Leaping Gorge is a scenic canyon on the Jinsha (Golden Sands) River and is a major tributary to the Yangtze river. It is a contender for the deepest gorge in the world depending on definition. Around 9 miles (15 km) in length, the gorge is located where the river passes between the 18,360 foot (5,596m) Jade Dragon Snow Mountain and the 17,703 ft (5,396 metres) Haba Snow Mountain in a series of rapids under steep cliffs. Legend has it that in order to escape from a hunter, a tiger jumped across the river at the narrowest point, 82 feet / 25 meters wide, hence the name.
The gorge and be visited by road and you can see the rapids, or you can embark on a 2 day overnight hike on the higher trail of the gorge. It is about a 2 hour drive from Lijiang to the gorge.
