Siberian Tiger Park   东北虎林园

The majestic Siberian Tiger is the largest living felid in the world, yet tragically it is critically endangered due to its exquisite fur and the demand for its organs in traditional medicine circles. The Siberian Tiger Park in Harbin is the largest Siberian tiger-breeding base in the world, built to facilitate breeding, protection and research of these beautiful animals. Visitors at the park have unrivaled access to the tigers, as well as lions, lynx, pumas and more.

Ice and Snow World   冰雪大世界

As the sun sets every day during the annual Harbin International Ice and Snow Sculpture Festival, thousands of multi-colored lights are switched on and illuminate the full size buildings, gigantic statues and ice-slides that are the main attraction at Harbin’s “Ice and Snow World”. These tremendous models are made from blocks of crystal clear ice that are often 2-3 feet thick and are a dazzling display of craftsmanship. Famous landmarks, mythical creatures and celebrities are all painstakingly replicated in ice, and the stark contrast of colorful, bright lights against the dark night truly is a breathtaking sight.

Opening hours:
8:00am until 10:00pm with last admission at 9:00pm

Zhongyang Pedestrian Street   中央大街

Where East meets West; Zhongyang pedestrian street is the commercial and cultural heart of Harbin and a perfect fusion of Chinese and foreign architecture. Harbin’s multi-cultural past is portrayed at its best here, and a stroll down this cobbled street is an aesthetic delight, with European-style colonial mansions converted to shops that sell French perfume, German snacks, Russian textiles and more. Take an early evening stroll down this historic boulevard to see the ornate hotels, restaurants and cafes illuminated by baroque-style street lamps.

Average time for this activity:
1 hour

Songhua River   松花江

Harbin’s natural beauty is best enjoyed from the banks of the enchanting Songhua River. Take a stroll through the parks that flank the river on both sides, lined with colorful flowers and twisted willow trees, where local people practice taichi and ballroom dancing. Relax and unwind as the calm waters take you past small islands with quaint pavilions and under the three large bridges built to cross this impressive river.

0.5 hour

St. Sophia Church   索菲亚教堂

Built by the Russians after the Chinese Boxer Rebellion (1899-1901), the exquisite St. Sophia Church is a feat of Eastern Orthodox architecture and a truly remarkable structure. Inspired by the great cathedrals in Moscow and the Ukraine, St. Sophia Church is adorned with intricate murals, gilded idols and is topped with a spectacular crucifix-topped dome. Step through the grand entrance and be transported back to Tsarist Russia in this, one of Harbin’s most unusual yet iconic buildings.

Dragon Tower   龙塔

At 336m in height, the Heilongjiang Province Broadcasting Tower soars above the Harbin skyline as the tallest steel tower in China. The tower itself is multi-functional, with TV broadcasting, wireless communications and even meteorological monitoring all under one roof. Test your nerves by taking the elevator to 181metres, where you can circumnavigate the tower’s widest point on a see-through glass walkway. Higher still and you will reach a revolving restaurant at 185metres, then a further viewing point at a lofty 190metres.

Provincial Museum   省博物馆

Harbin has long played host to many territorial disputes between China, North Korea, Japan, Mongolia and even Russia. Whilst tribal wars have scarred the history of this region, they did leave behind fascinating tales and precious relics. Many of these historical treasures are housed at the Heilongjiang Provincial Museum in Harbin, with extensive exhibitions including Jin (1115-1234) and Qing dynasty (1644-1911) textiles, World War II relics, jade and bronze figurines and even dinosaur fossils!

Also worth a walk in the day you can enjoy the slides too and then exit the park and warm up over lunch or coffee in a Russian cafe.

It is worth spending two nights in Harbin so you can have one evening for this park and another to visit the Ice and Snow World on Sun island..

Harbin (Ice Festival) 哈尔滨

Snow and ice festivals have taken place in Harbin for decades, mainly in Zhaolin Park south of the river. In 2000, winter events began on Sun island featuring large buildings and structures which dwarfed previous activities in Zhaolin Park. However the intimacy, ice carving contest and night lighting in Zhaolin Park still make it a must see in addition to the activities on Sun Island. On Sun Island you can visit Ice and Snow World which is especially nice when lit up in the evening. It is a colorful city of ice. Rather than using ice as a building material, you can see structures made of snow at the Snow Sculpture Park on Sun Island. A walk up the Zhongyang Pedestrian Street makes for great people watching, architecture spotting, coffee, snacks, dining, photo opportunities, and of course shopping. A hotel on this street is recommended for convenience.

Breakfast

Most hotels come with breakfast, or if not it can be added at a cost. Four and five star hotels will generally offer a good western and Chinese buffet breakfast. Three star hotels may only have a Chinese breakfast, or a Chinese interpretation of a western breakfast. Anyway a Chinese breakfast is not bad - rice porridge, eggs, Chinese style breads and vegetables.
Drinking Water:
Most of our tours offer unlimited bottled water in the vehicle so you can keep hydrated and healthy all day long. Grab a couple bottles to take to your room for the night. Tap water in big cities in China is not going to make you sick, it is chlorinated. Fine for brushing your teeth but best to stick to bottled water as you don't want to upset your system on your big trip.
Children and Special Diets:
Our guides are accustomed to handling special diets or the selective eating of children. Let us know in advance if you have food allergies or other special requests and we can plan for you. Children often find they like certain Chinese dishes, such as noodles, fried rice or sweet and sour pork. If a stop at McDonalds or KFC is required your guide can do this on the go.

Lunch

We consider experiencing good Chinese cuisine to be an important part of the tour experience. When on a tour, lunch is generally Chinese style and normally included in the price. Our guides will help you order according to your taste. Mild, spicy, meat, vegetables, rice and/or noodles. Dishes are served family style and shared by the guests. The driver may eat on his own but the guide will join you if you like.

Food in Beijing is quite good quality and we take our guests to genuine local restaurants, not tourist traps. We consider it distasteful to ask you for small amounts of money during the tour, so we offer unlimited standard drinks including Coke, Sprite, bottled water, Chinese tea and local beers. You also won't leave the table hungry, if you need more to eat just let your guide know.

We don't have fixed restaurants we must use, it depends on where you are at the time you are hungry. When traveling around China we normally have the same arrangements outside Beijing but this may vary depending on your exact itinerary.

Dinner

Unless there is a special activity planned or you prefer to have all your meals catered, guests often prefer to relax after a days tour and arrange their own dinner. This gives you flexibility in time and cuisine. Having all your meals catered every day can be tiresome. Handling your own dinner allows you to have some control and also strike out on you own. Your guide can give you restaurant suggestions and in big cities you can find lots of options for fine dining, fast food, both western or Chinese. Hotel staff can often make restaurant recommendations within walking distance.

If you get the taste for a burger or pizza after a lot of Chinese food, this is easily found in Beijing, Shanghai and many other cities around China. Many hotel restaurants offer nice food. China also has its share of McDonald's, KFC and Subway sandwich chains if you need a fix.
