The China Guide uses its own star rating system because star ratings are often misused by hotels and travel companies in China. Our hotels have been evaluated by our Western staff and categorized in an appropriate way. We also rely on the feedback of our clients so if you have comments regarding your accommodations please let us know.

★★★★★   There are two types: international chains and Chinese-owned brands. The international chains, such as Regent, Crowne Plaza, Sofitel, etc, are managed by an exceptional international brand which provides consistency from country to county. Chinese brands may lack some of the Western polish but are less expensive and can still provide a wonderful experience. According to our standards, a 5-star hotel does not necessarily have a swimming pool. The hotel service desks will have some English speaking staff, internet access for an additional fee, as well as Western and Chinese style breakfast.

★★★★☆   The hotel has an above average style of decor and quality of service for the Chinese market. It is something more than just a place to sleep. The hotel service desks will have some English speaking staff, internet access for an additional fee, as well as Western and Chinese style breakfast.

★★★☆☆   The hotel is clean, comfortable and safe. It is a place to get a good night's sleep at a budget price. The hotel w ill normally have internet access for an additional fee, as well as Chinese style breakfast possibly offering some western style dishes. English may not be spoken well at the service desk but your guide can help translate if necessary. Beds may not be as soft as 4 or 5 star hotels as the Chinese prefer hard beds.

★★☆☆☆   A safe and clean accommodation, but even more basic than 3-star. We do not normally recommend 2-star hotels, but can arranged them for groups on a shoestring budget.
