Pingyao Ancient City Travel Tips, Tours, Accommodation and Transportation Pingyao is an oasis of traditional China in the midst of modern development. Its a UNESCO World Heritage site and is preserved and restored accordingly. Pingyao's old city wall is still completely intact and no cars are allowed inside the walls. Tourist vehicles in the form of golf carts are used inside the walls to move guests around. The very center of the city is completely pedestrian, with no vehicles at all, so its actually very pleasant to stroll around.   Pingyao was once a major banking center on the Silk Road. It has an assortment of well maintained historic sights, shops, boutique courtyard hotels and restaurants. You need at least one night in Pingyao however if you can manage two you will be able to take time to stroll the labyrinth of pedestrian streets, enjoy some shopping, coffees and see some of the less popular sights. Outside the city about a 45 minute drive are some of the compounds (mansions) of the wealthy Chinese bankers who once populated the town, the best one being Wang's Family Compound. There are others, but this one is the biggest and best. Seeing more than one gets repetitive and unless you are truly a history buff one should do it for you. Getting to Pingyao: Train tickets to Pingyao are very hard to secure, so its advisable to fly. You arrive at Taiyang airport, one hour drive from Pingyao, and if you have arranged a tour with us your guide will be holding up a sign with your name on it when you exit security.
