Pingyao old city has fantastic people watching and lots of good photo opportunities. People don't mind having their photo taken, just be quick! Plenty of good window shopping but be sure to bargain. Places to sit down and enjoy a snack or even a good espresso coffee. The walled city is small enough you can easily stroll around. If you are on your own keep a card from your hotel in case you get lost, then you can ask for directions by showing the card to locals. A very safe and easy going town, really more of a village atmosphere.
