Qufu is a quiet, inviting Shandong town that packs a lot of history into a small area. The town’s most famous resident was Confucius, who was born into the important Kong family around 550 BC. The grandeur and majesty of Qufu's main historic sights, the Confucius Temple and the Kong Family Mansion, and their level of upkeep, are a testament to the continuing importance of Confucius and his ideologies in China.
The ancient walled core of Qufu is very small and mostly made up of the three major sights, but its quaint side streets are nice to explore on foot. The streets just next to the Confucius Temple and around the Bell Tower are usually full of antique and incense vendors.
