Temple of the Eight Immortals

Temple of the Eight Immortals

The Temple of the Eight Immortals (Ba Xian An) is the largest Taoist temple in Xi’an. It is located a short walk northeast of the east gate of the Xi'an City Wall.

The Temple was first built in the Song dynasty (960-1279) and covers a total area of 73,333 square meters. The various buildings and halls feature a number of depictions and statues of the Eight Immortals. The Temple is also notable for being the place where Empress Dowager Cixi and the Guangxu Emperor lived when they were escaping the invasion of Beijing by the Eight-Power Alliance in 1900. Cixi later donated a large amount of silver for the upkeep of the Temple.

The Eight Immortals are a group of legendary Chinese figures that are revered by Taoism. Specifically, the Eight Immortals are Han Zhongli, Zhang Guolao, Han Xiangzi, Tieguai Li, Cao Guojiu, Lv Dongbin, Lan Caihe and He Xiangu (the only female immortal). Said to have been born in the Song and Tang dynasties, the eight figures are frequently depicted in art, literature, and popular culture.
