Tiger Hill

Tiger Hill

A sizeable hill surrounded by dozens of acres of verdant parkland, Tiger Hill is a peaceful and atmospheric oasis of historic significance not far from Suzhou Old Town. The ancient pagoda that lies at the top of the hill is among Suzhou’s most iconic landmarks.

Highlights and Travel Tips

Covering an area of about 20 hectares (nearly 50 acres), Tiger Hill is a historic place that, according to legend, was the burial site of King Helu of the ancient Wu kingdom. Today, the 30-meter hill and its surrounding park are a popular tourist destination and peaceful getaway from the city.

Chief among the park’s attractions is the seven-story Yunyan Pagoda. Situated at the top of the hill, this large and beautiful tower, which today has a slight lean to it, dates back over 1,000 years and is seen as an emblem of Suzhou’s history.

Another site worth seeing in the park is Wanjing Villa, a garden that features numerous specimens of bonsai-style trees and shrubs.

Aside from these areas, Tiger Hill is a charming green space with numerous trees, pools, and streams, and makes for a nice place to stroll, if your time in Suzhou allows.

Please note that, although Tiger Hill is not very tall, it does require a short uphill walk to reach the pagoda at the top, so be sure to wear comfortable walking shoes.
