Located about 10km east of Yangshuo, Fuli is a small ancient village right beside the Li River at the conjunction of three impressive karst peaks. Fuli used to be a popular supply town for traders traveling up and down the river.
Although is called an "ancient town," Fuli does not actually have many old buildings, so those who come to see ancient Chinese architecture may be disappointed. However, Fuli does offer one particularly special thing: it is most famous for its exquisite hand-painted fans. Walking along the town's main street, visitors can see many examples of this elegant, traditional art form, and you can even try your hand at painting a fan in the traditional style yourself. These beautiful paper fans also make great souvenirs.
There is a large local market that deserves a stop while you are in Fuli. Here, you can have a real glimpse of the local culture, lifestyle, and cuisine. However, do be aware that dog meat is sometimes sold there.
