Travel With Children

Last updated on 2022-07-08

China is a great place to travel with children. The Chinese love children and are very friendly toward foreigners. Sometimes a bit too much attention is heaped on children, but generally it’s a lot of fun being told how good looking your children are. You may find that people express amazement when they find out you have more than one child in a land of mainly single-child families.

There is plenty for kids to do while on tour, including: walking or camping on the Great Wall; riding a toboggan down the Great Wall; driving electric boats on historic lakes; enjoying various activities in local parks; riding a cycle rickshaw through the old parts of town; making dumplings in a Chinese home; visiting a kindergarten or school; seeing a cricket show; making kites; and attending a kungfu show (and that’s just to name a few!).

There may also be opportunities for your children to play with other Chinese children. Chinese parents will often encourage their little children to play with foreigners. These short encounters along the way are part of the fun for kids.

When traveling with children, it’s important to consider your hotel situation. A suite in a three-star or four-star hotel can be a good option for families, as this often includes a separate living room and bedroom. Apartment-style hotels, while not the cheapest option, can work well too, as they usually come with a kitchen, laundry machine, one or two bathrooms, and separate bedrooms. Connecting rooms in hotels are not common in China, so be aware of this if you book two standard hotel rooms.

In China, tourist attractions base discounts for children on a child's height, not their age. Normally children under 1.0, 1.2 or 1.4 meters (approximately 3 ½ to 4 ½ feet) receive a discount depending on the site.
